Before you buy: what’s included, and what your office adds

How it works: self-paced online lessons with short videos and a quiz after each lesson. There is no live class or instructor. Learners can send a question to our trainers from any lesson (we answer within 2 business days) or call (916) 770-4050, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm Pacific. Each person who passes gets a dated certificate of completion. It is not continuing-education (CE) credit.

Post the phone numbers for your county’s child protective services, Adult Protective Services and local police, so staff never have to search during a hard moment.

Have each new licensed employee sign the §11166.5 statement before their first day, and keep the signed copies.

Audience

Who it’s for

  • Dentists, hygienists, physicians, nurses, RDAs and other staff licensed under Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code.
  • HR staff and supervisors of minors at businesses with 5 or more employees that employ minors (AB 1963).
  • Front desk and other staff, so everyone knows the warning signs and who to tell.
The law

What California law requires

Health practitioners are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect (Penal Code §11165.7). Reports go by phone immediately or as soon as practicably possible, with a written report within 36 hours (Penal Code §11166).

Health practitioners are also mandated reporters of elder and dependent adult abuse (Welfare and Institutions Code §15630): report by phone right away and in writing within two working days.

New health practitioner employees must sign a statement that they know the reporting law before they start work (Penal Code §11166.5). Employers of HR staff and supervisors of minors covered by AB 1963 must train them, and other employers are strongly encouraged to.

Failing to report is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in county jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both.

FAQ

Common questions

Are dental hygienists and assistants mandated reporters?
Dentists and dental hygienists are named in the law, and so is anyone licensed under Division 2 of the Business and Professions Code, which includes licensed dental assistants such as RDAs. Anyone else may also report.
Do I need proof before I report?
No. The standard is reasonable suspicion. You report what you saw and heard, and the agencies investigate.
Is telling my supervisor enough?
No. The duty is personal. Telling a supervisor does not replace your report, and no supervisor may stop you from reporting.
How often should staff take this training?
The law does not set a renewal schedule for most offices, but the duty never goes away. Our certificate shows a 12-month renewal date, and many practices refresh yearly.
Is this the official state training?
No. It is our own certificate of completion. It covers the duties in the law for dental and medical offices.
