Before you buy: what’s included, and what your office adds

How it works: self-paced online lessons with short videos and a quiz after each lesson. There is no live class or instructor. Learners can send a question to our trainers from any lesson (we answer within 2 business days) or call (916) 770-4050, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm Pacific. Each person who passes gets a dated certificate of completion. It is not continuing-education (CE) credit.

The law requires “an opportunity for interactive questions and answers with a person knowledgeable about the employer’s plan.” That person must know your plan, so your practice manager or plan administrator should be available to staff. Our lessons cover the law and the parts every plan shares.

The law

What SB 553 requires

California Labor Code §6401.9, added by SB 553, has been enforceable since July 1, 2024. Most California employers must have a written workplace violence prevention plan, keep a violent incident log, and train employees when the plan is first established and annually thereafter.

Training records must be kept for at least one year and show the dates, a summary of the content, who taught it and their qualifications, and the names and job titles of those trained.

There are exceptions, including facilities covered by Cal/OSHA’s health care standard (8 CCR §3342, which covers hospitals and certain other health facilities and services), employees teleworking from a place they choose, and places with fewer than 10 employees at any time that are not open to the public. A standalone dental or medical office that sees patients generally does not fit these exceptions.

Cal/OSHA is still writing a detailed standard, which the Standards Board is due to adopt by December 31, 2026. We will update this program and page when it is adopted.

FAQ

Common questions

How often is SB 553 training required?
When your workplace violence prevention plan is first established, then annually (Labor Code §6401.9).
Does SB 553 apply to dental offices?
Generally yes. A standalone dental or medical office open to the public is not in the health care settings covered by 8 CCR §3342 and does not meet the small, closed-to-public exception, so §6401.9 applies.
Is online SB 553 training enough?
It covers the required topics, but the law also requires a chance to ask questions of someone who knows your plan. Make sure your plan administrator is available to staff.
What records do we need?
Training records for at least one year, plus your written plan and violent incident log. Each certificate gives you a dated, verifiable record per person.
Will this change when Cal/OSHA adopts its standard?
Possibly. The detailed standard is due by December 31, 2026. We will update the lessons and this page when it is adopted.
