Before you buy: what’s included, and what your office adds

How it works: self-paced online lessons with short videos and a quiz after each lesson. There is no live class or instructor. Learners can send a question to our trainers from any lesson (we answer within 2 business days) or call (916) 770-4050, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm Pacific. Each person who passes gets a dated certificate of completion. It is not continuing-education (CE) credit.

Both standards require “an opportunity for interactive questions and answers with the person conducting the training session.” OSHA has said online training meets this only if a qualified trainer is available to answer questions at the time they come up.

Our trainer line, (916) 770-4050, is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm Pacific, and learners can send a question from any lesson. Your practice should still walk staff through its own exposure control plan and have someone qualified available while they train.

Audience

Who it’s for

  • Dental assistants, hygienists, dentists, sterilization staff and anyone else with occupational exposure.
  • Medical assistants, nurses and clinicians in outpatient practices.
  • Office managers who run the practice’s exposure control plan and training records.
The law

What OSHA requires, and how often

The OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2), requires training at the time of initial assignment to tasks with occupational exposure and at least annually thereafter, within one year of the previous training. In California, Cal/OSHA’s standard, 8 CCR §5193, sets the same timing.

Training records must show the dates, a summary of the content, the names and qualifications of the trainers, and the names and job titles of the people trained. Keep them for three years (1910.1030(h)(2)).

A dated certificate anyone can verify

Dated, with a serial number

Each person who passes gets a certificate showing their name, practice, program, lessons completed, score and date. Lessons end with a short quiz; the pass mark is 80%.

Anyone can check it

An auditor, inspector or employer can confirm a certificate is genuine at hipaa.comodotechnology.com/verify, with no account and without contacting us.

Not CE credit

It is a certificate of completion: proof the training happened. It is not continuing-education credit and not an accreditation or license.

FAQ

Common questions

How often is OSHA bloodborne pathogens training required?
At the time someone is first assigned to tasks with occupational exposure, then at least once a year, within one year of their previous training (29 CFR 1910.1030(g)(2)). Cal/OSHA’s §5193 requires the same.
Can bloodborne pathogens training be done online?
Yes, as long as the person can ask questions of a qualified trainer at the time they arise, and the practice covers its own exposure control plan. Our lessons cover the standard; your practice adds the site-specific part.
Who needs this training?
Every employee with occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. In a dental office that usually means dentists, hygienists, assistants and sterilization staff.
What records do we need to keep?
Training records for three years, showing dates, content, trainer names and qualifications, and the names and job titles of attendees. Our certificate gives you a dated, verifiable record for each person.
Is this OSHA certification?
No. OSHA does not certify training providers. This is a certificate of completion for the training, not an OSHA card and not CE credit.
